Finding a good book finally paid off.

My youngest son has to read every night for 20 minutes.  I think this is great because I believe reading is so important.  I remember when I was in school, we had to read or have our parents read to us over the summer and document what we read and how often.  I remember my mother getting frustrated with reading out loud, so she quit doing it and I believe that she just wrote in books that we "read."  For my son, I don't want to do that.  I want to make sure he's reading and understands what he's reading.

On that note, my son brings home a form every Thursday from school.  It's a packet actually, filled with homework pages for the week (Thursday to the following Thursday) and on the front page is a reading log.  He is to read for 20 minutes and I'm supposed to initial that he did.  He has to write down how many pages he read and then he has to write a brief summary of what he read.  That's the hard part.

The past couple of weeks he hasn't really been reading any good books.  Nothing that really keeps his interest and I don't want him reading The Diary of the Wimpy Kid every single night.  While that's a great series, I'm sure, I still want him reading something more challenging.

I came across my daughter's Fairy Tale book and I introduced it to him, hoping there'd be stories that he would enjoy.  You know, the CLASSICS.  Sure enough the first story he came to was The Ugly Duckling!  Perfect!  While he was reading, he kept stopping and just laughing about how everyone in the barn thought he was either a goose, a turkey or an ugly duck.

My son hasn't gotten to the end of the story yet, so I don't want to spoil it for him.  I'm just so proud that he's reading and he likes the story.  Moments like this are so important for my kids and I and it's one of the reasons why I really love being a mom.
